Traumatic experiences in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood can impact you in many different and unexpected ways.
It can prevent you from developing the type of relationships you want, make the world feel unsafe and dangerous, and interfere with your ability to engage with the world from day-to-day. The types of traumas we experience as people can be diverse, and many times, over your lifetime, you may have had to overcome more than one.
The effects of trauma on people can vary in their severity level and each person's experience of the symptoms of trauma are unique. You may find yourself experiencing:
nightmares and/or sleep problems
flashbacks
intrusive thoughts about the events
constant anxiety and far
difficulties related to appetite and eating habits
You also may feel the need to avoid the people or places that remind you of the event. You might find yourself experiencing anxiety and fear, and developing a mistrust of others and of the world.
In some cases, the trauma remains ongoing and each day is an exercise in survival. Traumatic stress and traumatic grief are complex and can feel overwhelming; you may worry that you will never feel better or find peace within your own mind and body.
